5.7 Reflections and Implications

At the first class, I was struck by creative language uses in students’ self-introductions. As stated earlier, I read their work holistically for meaning and welcomed Chinglish—efficiency was at a premium in a short, fast-paced course. If I had been strict about requiring proper English, it’s unlikely the class could have been as creative. I would have missed the Mini-c creativity around me, and failed to acknowledge it. Having a safe, relaxing environment was essential to this AL intervention. Nurturing creativities relies on surprises and unexpected turns.

As I pen this chapter, these students would have entered the teaching profession in their homeland. Likely, they are navigating an exam-centric society that yearns to become inventive and prolific. Are they encountering contradictions in creativity ? Apparently, ambitious creators are vigorously competing to prove their merit in a hierarchy that, according to Zhao (2014), suddenly placed a premium on originality. In a world of profound paradoxes, one can look to changing education reforms in Asia to speculate on what might come. Might there be support for a brand of liberal education that the Communist Party of China would filter and organize based on democratic centralism? Policy mandates such as Learning for Life, Learning Through Life, with requirements for comprehensive learner-centered education systems, suggest support for quality education and lifelong learning (Draper , 2012). Such curriculum and teacher development reforms have liberal components ostensibly benefitting new teachers.

Final points now address 4-C and AL complementary outcomes, and lessons and explanations. Hidden-c, the personal power of creativity , is an implication emerging from this writing, lightly touched upon herein. In Chap. 8, the Hidden-c concept is unpacked.
